Comincia cosi il mio viaggio alla ricerca del miglior afternoon tea di Londra, 

proprio da uno dei posti considerato uno tra i migliori in assoluto.  Il Claridges afternoon tea di Londra é una di quelle cose che si devono fare almeno una volta nella vita, specialmente se vivete in questa fantastica cittá. Uno tra gli alberghi piú belli e lussuosi di Londra, dove si puó anche pranzare e cenare nel loro bellissimo ristorante.

Certo, i prezzi non sono proprio a buon mercato, ma questa é una di quelle cose da fare una volta ogni tanto, per togliersi lo sfizio di mangiare qualche “treat” di alta qualitá.

La selezione dei te che offrono é favolosa, ce ne sono davvero di ogni tipo e da ogni parte del mondo. Si possono scegliere diverse combinazioni di afernoon teas, con champagne o senza (io sono stata molto fortunata ed ho approfittato dell’offerta con champagne rosé) e potete trovare i prezzi e le varie opzioni sul loro sito.

La tradizione dell’afternoon tea sembra sia stata introdotta da un’amica intima della Regina Vittoria, che suggerí di istituire un pasto leggero tra il pranzo e la cena. Per piú di un secolo, da Claridges viene seguita la stessa ricetta leggendaria per i loro scones, tramezzini e dolcetti.

Il te viene servito in un bellissimo foyer anni ’30, con moquette immacolata e tavoli imbanditi, che solo questo vale la pena della visita (e del prezzo pagato). Moltissimi personaggi famosi sono stati qui a pranzo o cena, tra cui Audrey Hepburn,

Io ho assaggiato nell’ordine buonissimi tramezzini con:

Salmone scozzese con aneto e maionese, su pane al malto

Uova d’anatra, pomodoro e senape al crescione su pane bianco

Pollo, asparagi, avocado e creme fraiche su pane ai cereali

Cetriolo, buttermilk, limone e rucola su pane bianco

Prosciutto qualita “Dorrington”, nasturzio, burro alla senape su pane alle cipolle

SCONES normali e scones all’uvetta, preparati freschi ogni giorno serviti con clotted cream (che io AMO alla follia) e Marco Polo gelée. Questa ancora non la conoscevo ma me ne sono INNAMORATA perdutamente. Una gelée fatta con bergamotto e vaniglia. Da svenire.

Tartellette al frutto della passione

Macaron gigante al tiramisu; penso di non aver mai mangiato un macaron piú buono in vita mia

Macaron alla fragola (questo extra, non era in menu ma me lo hanno portato perché festeggiavo il mio compleanno <3)

Torta all’arancia e mandorle con crema allo zafferano

Pasticcino cioccolata e burro d’arachidi: che ve lo dico affá. Per poco non rimanevo secca dalla goduria.

Eppure, se devo essere proprio sencera al 100 per cento…c’é un grosso ma: a mio parere, il prezzo che si paga per tutte queste cosine non vale la candela. Si, é vero, il posto é bellissimo e anche il te é stato buono, ma credo di poter dire che sicuramente ci sono altri posti migliori dove poter fare l’afternoon tea a prezzi decisamente piú “umani”. Certo, l’ambiente non sará lo stesso… ma il vostro portafogli certamente ringrazierá.

Ed ora passiamo ai voti:

Ambiente: 8.5/10

Te: 7/10

Pasticceria salata: 7 (per gli ingredienti di qualitá usati)

Pasticceria dolce: 7

Rapporto qualitá prezzo: 6/10 (la sufficienza perché l’ambiente aiuta ad alzare il voto)

Resta comunque un’esperienza che consiglio di fare, una bella idea regalo per amiche “esigenti” e per far contenta qualche mamma a cui piacciono le cose eleganti e sciccose.

And so, it begins, my journey in search of the best afternoon tea in London,

right from one of the most iconic venues in town. Claridge’s afternoon tea in London is one of those events that you must experience at least once in your lifetime, especially if you live in this fantastic city. One of the most stunning and luxurious hotels in London, where you can also have lunch and dine at their beautiful restaurant.

Needless to say, the prices are not cheap, but this is possibly the best way to treat yourself once in a while.

The tea selection is absolutely fabulous, as infuses from all over the world are available to satisfy even the most demanding customers. You can choose different combinations of afternoon teas, with or without champagne (I have been very lucky and have taken advantage of the offer with rosé champagne) and you can find the prices and options on their website.

The afternoon tea tradition seems to have been introduced by an intimate friend of Queen Victoria, who suggested setting up a light meal between lunch and dinner. For more than a century, Claridge’s has followed the same legendary recipes for their scones, sandwiches and sweets.

Tea is served in a beautiful 1930’s foyer with delightful décor and lavishly set tables, a pure treat for the eyes.

Numerous famous people have been here for lunch or dinner, including Audrey Hepburn,

I have tasted delicious sandwiches with:

Scottish salmon with dill and mayonnaise on malted bread

Duck eggs, tomato and mustard on white bread

Chicken, asparagus, avocado and crème fraiche on cereal bread

Cucumber, buttermilk, lemon and rocket on white bread

“Dorrington” ham, cress and mustard butter on onion bread

Plain and raisins scones, freshly baked daily and served with clotted cream (which I adore) and Marco Polo Gelée. I had never tasted the latter but I fell utterly in love with it. A gelée made with bergamot and vanilla. Absolutely superb.

Passion fruit tartelette

Giant tiramisu macaron; I think I have never eaten such a good macaron in my entire life

Strawberry macaron (this was a surprise, as it was not on the menu, but I was given it because I was celebrating my birthday <3)

Orange and almond cake with saffron cream

Chocolate and peanut butter pastry: just the name says it all. Such a luxurious treat.

However, if I could be 100% honest, there’s a big aspect that leaves me dubious: in my opinion, the price paid for all these delicious treats is not worth the candle. Certainly, the location is impressive and the tea is exquisite, but I think I could say quite firmly that there are many other places as good as Claridges where the afternoon tea can be enjoyed at much more “accessible” prices. Obviously, the atmosphere will be different … but your wallet will certainly thank you. And now, the votes: Atmosphere: 8.5 / 10 Tea: 7/10 Salty pastry: 7 (for quality ingredients used) Sweet pastry: 7 Value for money ratio: 6/10 (the atmosphere definitely raised the ratio) Nevertheless, it is still an experience I recommend doing, a nice gift idea for “demanding” friends and to satisfy all the moms who would like to take part to a luxurious and elegant afternoon. What about you?
